DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Twin-engined STOL military/utility aircraft with larger cabin and payload capacity than the Otter, as well as rear loading/air drop capability. Although
certificated to U.S. civil regulations (CAR-4b), most of the Caribou aircraft went to military or government operators. The DHC-4 model was designed with
maximum takeoff, landing and zero fuel weights all equal to 26,000 lb. The -4A was cut-in at S/N 23, and some of the earlier aircraft also were upgraded to operate at the higher weights noted below. Reversible
propellers were introduced as a special option, and fitted to all aircraft after S/N 149. They became standard on S/N 212 and subsequent. |
