DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:
Designed to be operated as a "half-ton truck" in Canada's northern bush areas, the Beaver is an extremely
versatile aircraft and has been used in a wide variety of roles, both civil and military. It can be converted for use on floats, amphibious gear, skis and wheel/skis, as well as on standard wheels.
Several new concepts were pioneered with the Beaver:
- STOL (Short Take Off & Landing) the idea of clearing a 50 ft obstruction in approximately 1,000 ft horizontally for both takeoff and landing
All-metal construction (new for "bush" aircraft)
Full-span flaps (Single slotted flaps; ailerons "droop" as flaps are extended)
"Rubber-in-compression" shock absorbers for the main landing gear
The last 60 aircraft were built as Turbo Beavers, fitted initially with PT6A-6 engines (500 SHP) and later retrofitted with PT6A-20's when production of the -6 ceased. The Turbo Beaver has a 28 inch "plug"
in the fuselage ahead of the wing, thereby permitting 7 seats in the cabin instead of 5. |
